Endogenous kappa-opioid mediation of stress-induced potentiation of ethanol-conditioned place preference and self-administration
- R. Sperling, Stacey M. Gomes, Elizabeth I Sypek, A. Carey, J. McLaughlin
- Biology, PsychologyPsychopharmacology
- 17 April 2010
These data demonstrated a stress-induced potentiation of the rewarding effects and self-administration of ethanol mediated by KOR signaling, as well as demonstrating the role of the KOR in the resulting behaviors.
Anthocyanin-rich açai (Euterpe oleracea Mart.) fruit pulp fractions attenuate inflammatory stress signaling in mouse brain BV-2 microglial cells.
- S. Poulose, D. Fisher, B. Shukitt-Hale
- BiologyJournal of Agricultural and Food Chemistry
- 20 January 2012
The protection of microglial cells by açai pulp extracts was also accompanied by a significant concentration-dependent reduction in cyclooxygenase-2, p38 mitogen-activated protein kinase (p38-MAPK), tumor necrosis factor-α (TNFα), and nuclear factor κB (NF-κB).

Modulation of oxidative stress, inflammation, autophagy and expression of Nrf2 in hippocampus and frontal cortex of rats fed with açaí-enriched diets
- S. Poulose, D. Bielinski, A. Carey, A. Schauss, B. Shukitt-Hale
- BiologyNutritional neuroscience
- 28 May 2017
An açaí-enriched diet could possibly modulate Nrf2, which is known to modulate the intracellular redox status, thereby regulating the ubiquitin-proteosomal pathway, ultimately affecting cognitive function in the aging brain.

Blueberry polyphenols attenuate kainic acid-induced decrements in cognition and alter inflammatory gene expression in rat hippocampus
- B. Shukitt-Hale, F. C. Lau, J. Joseph
- BiologyNutritional neuroscience
- 1 August 2008
Results indicate that blueberry polyphenols attenuate learning impairments following neurotoxic insult and exert anti-inflammatory actions, perhaps via alteration of gene expression.
Beneficial effects of fruit extracts on neuronal function and behavior in a rodent model of accelerated aging

Endogenous κ Opioid Activation Mediates Stress-Induced Deficits in Learning and Memory
- A. Carey, Angela M Lyons, Christopher F. Shay, Ocean Dunton, J. McLaughlin
- Biology, PsychologyJournal of Neuroscience
- 1 April 2009
Results suggest that stress-induced activation of the KOR may be both necessary and sufficient to produce subsequent deficits in novel object recognition.
Effects of Conditional Central Expression of HIV-1 Tat Protein to Potentiate Cocaine-Mediated Psychostimulation and Reward Among Male Mice
- J. Paris, A. Carey, Christopher F. Shay, Stacey M. Gomes, Johnny J. He, J. McLaughlin
- Biology, PsychologyNeuropsychopharmacology
- 2014
Together, these data suggest that central HIV-1 Tat expression can potentiate the psychostimulant behavioral effects of cocaine in mice.
